I honestly don’t even think the word thanks can express the gratitude that we should all have towards our hardworking physicians.

and I don’t just mean now because of the pandemicwe should ALWAYS be this grateful to them for what they give up and sacrifice to become doctors.

When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit North America, I was initially paralyzed by panic and fear as I saw what the physicians in Italy were having to endure.

ย This hit very close to home for me as my husband is a first-year resident doctor. All I could think about was “is this going to happen to our hospitals too?”

After having just spent 4 years with him in Ontario where he completed medical school – ALL of my closest friends, my clients, and even members of my online program are all mostly in healthcare.

Fun Fact: MOST of the women in the video exercises in Love Your Bod are Physicians or Nurses who helped me just because they are kind humans who wanted to support me.ย 

All I could think about was how everyone I know and love was about to have their world come crashing down on them.ย 

Not only was I worried about their own safety, for fear that they would catch this virus while working, but I was also VERY concerned about their mental health.

The path to becoming a doctor isn’t easy to say the least.

4 Years of university+ 2 years more to complete a master’s degree (optional, but many do it) + 4 years of medical school (2 of those years traveling across the country for 2-week elective rotations on your own dime) + 2-5 years of specialty resident training PLUSย  1-2 years MORE training to complete fellowships.ย 

Um WHAT?! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Ya … THAT.

I’m not sure it’s common knowledge for most people to understand what it takes for your doctor to become the person looking after your health.ย 

To say that they have had to sacrifice a lot to get to where they are is an understatement.ย 

Honestly, having seen my friends, clients, and husband all go through this process has made me realize just how important it is that we take care of our doctors too.ย

When was the last time you looked at your doctor as said:

“What’s up doc? How are YOU feeling today?”

Physician burnout is a real thing and can happen at any point during one’s medical career, or during their training even without a global pandemic turning the hospitals upside down.

While thankfully our situation here in Canada hasn’t overwhelmed our healthcare system, it doesn’t mean that this may not happen again in the future.ย 

So there are a few things that I want to ask for your help with so that WE can help out our physicians too.

  1. I have a doctor friend (shoutout to Chris Griffiths) who’s sister is a boss of a female entrepreneur (shoutout to Joanna Griffiths creator of Knix.) Together they have been raising money for PPE items (masks, gowns and gloves) that are crucial to ensure their safety of our physicians. These items have been running out in many hospitals across North America – without them we can’t protect our physicians.   2. Please be respectful,ย  kind & patient with your doctor, nurses, and all other hospital staff. They are working VERY hard and doing the best that they can to help you. Kindness can go along way. They work VERY hard, get little sleep, and hardly get time for self-care themselves – all so that they can help you in your time of need. Please respect that.   3. Continue to respect social distancing practices. This is THE BEST thing we can do right now. Listen to our public health teams and their recommendations. As mentioned above – while we may THINK we may know better, look at the many many many years of training that our doctors have. We need to listen to their advice as we don’t know better than they do.ย
